Essential Skills for Training a Puppy at Home

Puppies, no matter the breed, are a great addition to a family. They are fun to be around and generally liven up a home. Moreover, puppies can teach children a lot, including responsibility and social skills. That said, having a well-trained puppy at home makes the experience even better. Although some pet owners prefer to hire a trainer for their puppy, you can teach your puppy the basics with a bit of effort and patient. This article highlights essential skills for training a puppy at home.

Responding to Their Name — Most pet owners cherish the process of choosing a name for their puppy. That said, you can choose the perfect name for your pet, but it would mean nothing if they cannot respond to it. Thus, it is essential to teach your puppy to respond when you call them. The last thing you want is to go to a park and lose control of your puppy because they cannot respond to your shouts. Notably, the best time to train a puppy is right after they arrive home, and an excellent strategy to use is the reward system. It means giving a puppy a treat every time you call their name. Over time, calling out their name acts as a trigger, and they respond accordingly. Finally, you can withdraw the treats gradually until their response becomes automatic.

Loose-Leash Walking — It is vital to use a leash when walking your puppy. In fact, pet owners must use a leash in specific areas regardless of whether their dogs are trained or not. Since puppies get excited in new environments, walking them with a leash can be challenging because they keep pulling in all directions, which is dangerous in busy streets. It also drains your energy since you have to keep holding a leash tight throughout your walks. Training a puppy on loose-lease walking allows them to keep closer by your side. However, you can only choose to teach them loose-lease walking on either your right side or left side, not both.

'Stay' Cue — If you successfully teach your puppy to understand the 'stay' cue, you will have a fan and hassle-free experience with them. Learning the 'stay' cue means that a puppy sits still and does not move until you give the release command. Typically, the training teaches your puppy impulse control, which is crucial during meal times, when crossing a street, or when you have guests at home. Training a puppy the "stay" cue should be gradual, and it should start with you sitting close to them. Then, over time, lengthen the distance and time until they understand that the only time they can move is when they hear the release command.
